Crochet for a cause. Supporting Maria Gormley’s remembrance display and her fundraising activity for Sands. ❤️
FUNDRAISING FOR SANDS
The Big Crochet Event for a Cause
We are back for our second year! The Big Crochet 2021 is taking place at The Red Beach Hut at Walton On-the-Naze to fundraise for Sands during Baby Loss Awareness Week, 9th to 14th October 2021
Yes, we will crochet at the beach. An experience for your memory book. ❤️
It is an opportunity for bereaved parents, families and friends, to commemorate babies’ lives and to raise awareness about pregnancy and baby loss to drive for the improvements that are needed for parents and families now and in the future.
If you can’t crochet, yes you can knit!
We want to see how many teddies we can make and add to a fantastic remembrance display in Clacton run by Maria Gormley.
Bring your crochet hook and a chair to the beach on your chosen day.
Meet at Hut D8 and scan our NHS QR code to comply with new Track and Trace requirements.
Tell everyone what you are doing and share photos on social media using the event hashtags #BigCrochet #RedBeachHut
Booking your space ensures we are able to run a COVID-19 Secure event. The exact times for each day will be confirmed the week before the event as they are dependent on the tide times as we are sitting on the beach.

CROCHET OR KNIT – YOU CHOOSE
The Pattern & Help Video
We are making small crocheted teddies that are simple and easy to crochet or knit. Many people getting involved are just learning. You can find two sets of instruction on this page.
The video instructions are easy to follow and broken down into separate parts. Watch the Videos.
There are also written crochet instructions and knitting instructions that can be downloaded using the buttons on the right.
If you need any help with the pattern you can reach out to others on the Event page on Facebook. Join in on the discussion on the event page. I’m sure we will have some experienced crocheters willing to offer advice!
If you are joining in at the beach there is no need to purchase your own yarn. Nanna’s Yarn Barn has kindly donated the yarn that which we will bring to the beach.
Once you have finished a Teddy, everyone (whether you made them at the beach or at home) will be able to drop off your crocheted teddies to Fiona at Nanna’s Yarn Barn for them to be sent to join Maria’s display.

About Maria and Her Display
This year is the second year running that Maria Gormley is running her remembrance display and she is going bigger than before. Her display is raising money for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, who provide support services and work to reduce the number of baby deaths.
When Maria reached out to us and asked for a simple donation, we knew that we wanted to do more than just offer money. The Big Crochet event was created to raise awareness and gain more donations for her cause. The bears that you crochet will be added to the display, along the Memorial Garden Railings on the Clacton on Sea Seafront.
